Hi Families,
We have a busy week ahead. Reading groups will be on Monday and Tuesday again this week , so be sure your child has returned the folder that went home last week.  Please have your child put their name on their worksheet, its a great habit to get into and it helps me out back at school. I would love to hear your input and help with anything that you and your child are finding challenging about reading groups. We will be participating in the hough neighborhood St Paddys day parade Monday March 17th.Everyone is welcome to join us at the parade, even if this is not your child’s regular day to come to school. Class will let out at 11:30 on this day to give everyone a chance to get to the parade route and get in line. Also, we would encourage you to send a small lunch for your child to school(No nuts or nut products) that we will eat around 11:00 so they wont be hungry when we are waiting and walking during the parade. Then we all meet up in front of Hough Elementary school at 12:00. The parade starts at 12:30 and takes about 45 mins to walk the route. You may bring strollers or wagons and the whole family is invited to come along. The Busy Bee kids can wear their green tie-dyed shirts and any other green attire that they wish, the greener the better! We go rain or shine and have really enjoyed the time with our LAPS family celebrating our great community. Let me know if I can answer any more questions about this.
In class this week we are going to be continuing our unit about spring weather. We will be learning about the water cycle and do some science activities that will help us learn about weather.  We will be painting some spring trees and writing words about spring.
It’s getting about that time of the school year when Kindergartens are having their “Kindergarten round-up”. Now is a good time to contact the school your child will be attending in the Fall and find out when they are having theirs. It helps make the transition easier when your child has lots of time to get used to a new school and the idea of big kid school. Visit the playground there, talk about the things that will be similar(outside play, circletime, friends, work time) and the things that may be different(new teacher, riding a bus, bigger school building). Let me know if you need help transitioning your Busy Bee or finding out more about the school your child will be attending. Remember that LAPS is still offering Kindergarten here.
The dinner/auction has not had a very popular response. The low ticket sales has prompted a thought to cancel the event. Please help us get enough interest in this so we can continue with this fundraising evening. We need to sell more tickets so invite your friends, family and neighbors. The auction has many great items and need people to come bid on them! We do have limited childcare still available at a very reasonable price. I know we ask for your support often and appreciate so much what you have done for the class and our school. This is the last fundraising event for the school year and proceeds will be going to classroom materials and scholarships. Thank you in advance for stepping up and giving us your support.
SUMMER CAMP is going to be so fun! We are offering two weeks and 4 fun themes that are sure to be a favorite of your child,Legos, Disney, pirates and princesses and dinosaurs! Summer camp is from 9-12 everyday for the weeks of July 14-18 and 21-25. We will have yummy snacks ,lots of outside/water play and a fun take home souvenir that relates to the theme of the week. Registration forms will be out soon.
Please let us know if you have question or concerns. We are here to help your child and family have a positive school experience and feel supported. Thanks for the privilege of being a part of your child's learning process.

Hi Families,
Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead for daylight savings time!
Last week we talked about money, coin names and value. We set up our “Busy Bee Store” and everyone was super excited to take a turn shopping or working. We will keep it up through this week, so if you have empty boxes of grocery items we would take a few more. This week we are going to be discussing spring weather, rainbows and St. Patricks day. We have some fun art to do and a silly song about St Patricks day to learn.
Reading groups will be on Monday and Tuesday again this week , so be sure your child has returned the folder that went home last week. I have heard that the take home work has been fun for the kids and they are excited to “Read” to you. Remember that kids are on different levels in their skill development and its ok if the are memorizing the books rather than actually reading them, but please encourage pointing at the words together and helping them sound out a few easy ones. Please have your child put their name on their worksheet, its a great habit to get into and it helps me out back at school. I would love to hear your input and help with anything that you and your child are finding challenging about reading groups.
We are almost ready to get a new pet for our classroom! After lots of talks and some great ideas(dog, cat, snake?) I think we have chosen a Hamster. Ivy’s family donated the cage last week and the “Hamster baby shower” sign up sheet is full. As soon as we have all the things we need for keeping a hamster safe and comfortable, I will get one and bring it in. We have been talking about how different this pet will be from Lulu and that it is just a baby. So handling it and having it go home for visits will be a learning process for all. Most important, the kids are excited to have a pet again. Thank you for your support through this, it has helped bunches.
Next Monday, March 17th. We will be participating in the hough neighborhood St Paddys day parade. Class will let out at 11:30 on this day to give everyone a chance to get to the parade route and get in line. Also, we would encourage you to send a small lunch for your child to school(No nuts or nut products) that we will eat around 11:00 so they wont be hungry when we are waiting and walking during the parade. We go rain or shine and have really enjoyed the time with our LAPS family celebrating our great community. Let me know if I can answer any more questions about this.
Our annual school Auction/Dinner is coming soon. Pre-sale tickets are now available until the end of the week. Early bird prices are $15 per person or $25 per couple. Ticket prices will go up on March 17th and will end on the 21st. There are a limited amount of spaces for childcare that evening, check in the preschool office if you are interested in that. The kids are working on some great auction items and we are still in need of donations for the classroom baskets. Even a small item or cash donation is helpful. Thanks for your help making this evening successful.
I want to be sure that everyone is aware of the make up of the snow days for the school year. Our school year has been extended to June 19th. This means that Busy Bee class Graduation will be June 16th and 17th. The morning classes will be at 10:30 and the afternoon class will be on Tuesday at 1:30. We will be singing some songs and celebrating your Busy Bee’s with cake, snacks and a end of year video slideshow. Please mark your calendars!
Summer is  just a dream still, but if you are planning for your kids summer activities, please consider having them come to LAPS 2 weeks of summer camp in July. We offer fun themes, yummy snacks and lots of outside play and exploration. Summer camp is from 9-12 everyday for the weeks of July 14-18 and 21-25. Registration forms and more info coming soon!
Please let us know if you have question or concerns. We are here to help your child and family have a positive school experience and feel supported. Thanks for the privilege of being a part of your child's learning process.

Hi Families,
Here we are in March and ready to move into some new learning themes. After finishing up our unit about keeping healthy last week, we will be exploring money next. We’ll be talking about what the different kinds of coins are called and their value, we’ll be sorting coins, learn some songs about them and do some creative writing about what we would “save” our money to buy. Having some conversations at home about money, coins and saving would be a great bridge to what we’’ll be doing in class. To go along with our money learning, we will be setting up a “Store” in our class to get our imaginations working. We could use some empty boxes of grocery items to stock our shelves. Thanks for your help.
Reading groups will start this week on Monday and Tuesday during our time in small groups. The kids and I will “read” a book together and then they will bring that book home to read to/with you. It will come home in a folder along with a game or worksheet to do at home. The next school day they should bring the folder back to school with everything inside. Each week they will get new material sent home to work on. If the folder is not returned before the next reading group, they still participate in the reading group time, but aren’t getting to take home anything until the folder has been returned. I have a limited amount of readers that go home and really need them for the next group. We will continue with these reading groups through The first week in June. Thanks for your cooperation with this and for helping make this an exciting and important part of your child’s school experience.
March is here and we are hoping to get a jump on our classroom action basket. The AM class is putting together a “Date night” basket. There is an info sheet out in the hallway to let you know the items needed or if you want to donate money towards the basket. The Afternoon class will be doing a basket with a family “Get moving” theme, watch for an info sheet about that. The Auction/Dinner is Saturday March 29th. Watch for ticket info coming soon. There will be Childcare offered for this night ,but space is limited. Please consider joining us and supporting our school. It is a fun night out without your kids and a chance to talk to other adults without interruptions and maybe get some great silent auction deals. Thanks in advance for all your help with this event.
Mark your calendars for Monday March 17th and join Little acorn preschool as we celebrate St. Paddy’s Day and our community. We will be walking in the Hough neighborhood parade. All little acorn families are welcome to come walk with us. Strollers and wagons are welcome and lots of green decorations! We have been doing this for several years and it has always been a fun event. More info about time/meeting place to come in the next few weeks.
Just a reminder about volunteer hours: You are required to do 2 hours per child, one can be classroom help and the other should be help with an event here at school. The auction/Dinner is a great place to get your time in. Check the preschool office door to sign up.
Another issue that has come up is the make up of the snow days for the school year. Our school year has been extended to June 19th. This means that Busy Bee class Graduation will be June 16th and 17th. The morning classes will be at 10:30 and the afternoon class will be on Tuesday at 1:30. Hi Families,
Last week we learned a lot about having healthy bodies, washing hands and drinking water. The Morning class got a visit from Dr. Suzie who talked to us about keeping healthy teeth. The afternoon class gets their visit from the dentist this week on Thursday. We will keep with the theme of health and bodies as we talk about exercise, eating healthy food and getting sleep. We are going to be making healthy smoothies on Mon/Tues and do an activity with clocks and telling time. The morning class got to “Talk” to our friend Charlotte on the computer on Friday. She and her family have been in Argentina for the last few months and are coming back to the Busy Bee class in March. She has sent us a package that we are excited to get and the kids got to ask some questions about what its like there in Buenos Aries.
This Friday night is another Family Fun night here at LAPS. This month we are celebrating Dr. Suess and his Birthday. There will be birthday cupcakes, face painting, crafts and a dance party! Everyone is invited and everything is free, so come on out @ 5:30 to join the fun.
Reading groups will start next week. They will be on Mon/Tues each week during work time in small groups. The kids and I will “read” a book together and then they will bring that book home to read to/with you. It will come home in a folder along with a game or worksheet to do at home. *No school Monday February 17th/Presidents Day
Hi Families,
Thank you for helping make our Valentine’s party fun and for bringing your child to the play last week. Your support of your child’s school experience is so important for their success. The thing I love about our school is how great the families are, thanks for that!
This week we are going to be moving into a new learning unit. Over the next few weeks we will be talking about healthy bodies. We have visits from the dentist, talk about healthy food and junk food, and what our bodies need to grow and be healthy. Another concept we will be touching on is “time”. We’ll learn about the parts of a clock and how to tell what time it is. This is a big concept to grasp for 5 year olds, but it’s a great time to introduce it.
I am preparing to begin reading groups in the next few weeks. This will be a once a week activity we do during work time in small groups. The kids and I will “read” a book together and then they will bring that book home to read to/with you. It will come home in a folder along with a game or worksheet to do at home. The next school day they should bring the folder back to school with everything inside. Each week they will get new material sent home to work on. There is an info sheet out in the hallway to let you know the items needed. The Afternoon class will also be doing a basket, but have not chosen a theme yet. If you have ideas or something you would like to donate towards a basket, please let me know. The Auction/Dinner is Saturday March 29th. Watch for ticket info coming soon.

Hi Families,
The winter weather is getting in the way of our classroom time after missing class Thursday afternoon and Friday. There is a potential for a closure on Monday also, so be aware of the possibility. An email will be sent and a remind 101 will go out as soon as I hear any news. We generally go with what the Vancouver schools decide to do when it comes to inclement weather. If they are 2 hours delayed, we will not have Monday AM class.
The kids are really enjoying the talk about “love” and the “heartful helper” hearts. This week we continue on with our theme. We will have a classroom party on Thurs/Fri. The kids need to bring Valentine cards to give their classmates. Have them write their name on the “From” and leave the “to” blank. It is easier to deliver the cards to each kids bag when they are not named. The morning groups have 15 kids and the afternoon class has 10. We will be making heart shaped pizza and having some other party snacks. There are a few things left to sign up for if you haven’t yet.
This week will be the field trip to “Goodnight Moon” on Wednesday Feb 12th. There will be no class on this day, we will meet at the theater 15 mins before the show begins. Parking can be tricky , so making a plan to carpool with another family might be a good idea.
The LAPS annual Dinner/auction is coming in March and needs some volunteers to help with the planning process and pre-event organizing. This would count towards your required volunteer hours for the school year. Let me know or stop by the preschool office and talk to Maria if you can help with anything. This has been a fun and profitable event for our school in the past and with your help we can keep up the tradition. Our classroom will be responsible for putting together an auction basket, watch for more info about this coming soon.
Please let us know if you have question or concerns. We are here to help your child and family have a positive school experience and feel supported. Thanks for the privilege of being a part of your child's learning process.

Hi Families,
The hibernation celebration was a big hit last week. Thanks for helping make the day fun for your Busy Bee. This week as we move in to February, we will start a new learning unit all about “Love” and Valentine’s Day. We have a bunch of heart shaped art to work on and will be sending home a work at home project called “Heartful helpers”. We will be doing a journal page about something that “I Love” and be writing the words love and heart. The kids have been enjoying our classrooms turn with the “light table”. It is pretty cool and has some fun manipulative s that go with it. Ask your Busy Bee if they have been trying it out and what they like about it.
This week on Wednesday our school will be having registration for the 2014-2015 school year for families already enrolled at Laps. Then on Friday it will be open registration for new families .There could be a few more cars in the parking lot and people in the building. Please let anyone you know who would love a great school experience for their kids to come and check out Little acorn. If anyone is considering our Kindergarten for their child, this would be the time to sign up.
Next week will be the field trip to “Goodnight Moon” on Wednesday Feb 12th. There will be no class on this day, we will meet at the theater 15 mins before the show begins. Parking can be tricky , so making a plan to carpool with another family might be a good idea.
Our class will have a Valentines Day party on Feb.13 & 14th. Watch for a sign up sheet to send a food item. Also we will do a card exchange where the kids can give a card to their classmates. Have the kids write their name in the “from” place and leave the “to” blank. We have 15 kids in the AM class each day and 10 kids in the PM class. Let me know if you have questions about this.
The LAPS annual Dinner/auction is coming in March and needs some volunteers to help with the planning process and pre-event organizing. This would count towards your required volunteer hours for the school year. Let me know or stop by the preschool office and talk to Maria if you can help with anything. Our classroom will be responsible for putting together an auction basket, watch for more info about this coming soon.
Remember to keep sick kids home and let us know if they have flu like symptoms so we can track how many families are being affected by this flu going around. We are working hard to keep germs away and sanitize classrooms and play areas. Having kids wash their hands before they come into class(especially if they come from the playroom) would be another way we can keep our classroom germ free.
Always dress your kids for outside play, we go out most days if it is not raining. A hat and gloves sometimes makes for a more enjoyable playtime for you Busy Bee.
Please let us know if you have question or concerns. We are here to help your child and family have a positive school experience and feel supported. Thanks for the privilege of being a part of your child's learning process.
